Cycling

Our cycling program assists individuals of all abilities learn about cycling options including handcycles and adult tricyles. We offer the opportunity to try different cycling equipment to help find out what works best for you. If you would like to try one of our cycles, contact Glen Ashlock at 734-971-0277, ext. 33, or by email at gashlock@aacil.org.

Weekly Group Rides

We hold weekly group rides on Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM at the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living from April to September. We ride the one mile loop of Research Park Drive. You can bring your cycle or use one of ours by calling in advance to reserve the cycle that is right for your needs. If it rains, the event will be cancelled.

For information about the cycling program, contact Mary Stack at 734-971-0277, ext. 22, or email at mstack@aacil.org.

IRide

The Third Annual Great Lakes Independence Ride

An Inclusive Cycling Adventure
August 6 through 9, 2009

The 2009 Great Lakes Independence Ride is the only inclusive cycling event of its kind in Michigan. It is a 1 to 4-day tour between Holland and Ann Arbor beginning August 6th and ending on August 9th. IRide is a fun event that encourages full inclusion regardless of the type of cycle you ride. Everyone, with or without a disability, is invited to participate at whatever distance fits their abilities.

IRide route options include four First Miles, four 1-day rides, a 2-day ride on Saturday and Sunday, and the full 4-day ride.

Participating in the IRide is both a personal challenge and an opportunity to raise funds for Disability Network / Michigan member CILs throughout the state! Member CILs are local non-profit organizations dedicated to the success of children, youth, and adults with disabilities at home, in school, in the community and at work!

  • The IRide covers approximately 50 miles each day on lightly traveled paved roads.
  • Lunch and snacks will be provided at rest breaks along the way.
  • IRiders travel and work together in groups with riders of a similar pace.
  • Overnight lodging is provided for the multi-day riders.
  • Transportation to return IRiders and their equipment from their ride's finish to their starting point is available.
  • IRide registration includes a cycling jersey or t-shirt.
  • Riders' personal wheelchairs or mobility aids will be waiting at each rest stop along the route.
  • We will work to accommodate all riders throughout the trip.

If you would like to speak to a CIL representative about how to participate in the IRide, volunteer opportunities, or making a tax-deductible donation to support the ride, please contact Mary Stack at 734-971-0277, ext. 22, or email at mstack@aacil.org.
