Subsidized HousingThere is a limited supply of subsidized housing in the Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti area. It’s typical for persons with income concerns and mobility limitations to experience difficulties when trying to find housing. They want and need housing next week or next month – not next year! The problem is that there is a limited supply of subsidized housing options. We suggest calling the following providers. Ask for an application, complete filling it out, and then turn it in. Then you’ll be on their waiting list (if open). Waiting lists are typically two to five years. Ann Arbor Housing Commission: Provides public housing for seniors, people with disabilities, and other low-income individuals and families who have resided in the city of Ann Arbor for at least the previous 6 months. Rent is 30% of the available monthly income. Often there is a waiting list. If the person has a criminal record and their conviction is violent or drug-related, the Commission cannot house them. All others are subject to review. Avalon Housing: Avalon Housing is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and managing permanent rental housing for people with extremely low incomes in Washtenaw County. Avalon owns and operates 173 units of housing, scattered at 15 sites throughout Ann Arbor. Rents are structured to be affordable to people with incomes at or below 30% of the area median income, and the majority of tenants include people who were homeless and who have a mental or physical disability. Support services are available to all tenants in order to assist them in maintaining their housing stability and enhance their quality of life. Chidester Place: Offers site-based subsidized housing for seniors, people with disabilities, and other low-income individuals. Often, they have a waiting list. Rent is 30% of the available monthly income. If the person has criminal record and their conviction is violent or drug-related, they will not house them. All others are subject to review. Maplewood Apartments: Offers site-based, below market subsidized housing. Although this place is subsidized, their rates are NOT tied to income. The waiting list for a one bedroom is typically nine months to a year. If you can find a roommate you like, the wait for a two bedroom is usually three to six months. Sorry, they won’t rent out two bedrooms to single individuals. Ypsilanti Housing Commission: Provides public housing for seniors, people with disabilities, and other low-income individuals and families who have resided in the city of Ypsilanti for at least the previous 6 months. Rent is 30% of the available monthly income. If the person has a criminal record and their conviction is violent or drug-related, the Commission cannot house them. All others are subject to review.
